The Fascinating KT170

Tung-Sol KT170 is an octal-based beam tetrode vacuum tube. It is the 2021 newly released flagship of the KT (kinkless tetrode) tube family.

Audiophiles love the KT family, and the KT88 has maintained a center role since 1956. There were multiple attempts to develop a new vacuum tube for high-end audio, that rivaled the sonic performance of KT88 with higher power.

The KT170 is the latest attempt from Tung-Sol and by far the best attempt based on Cayin's experience with all the KT vacuum tubes currently available.

It features a high-efficiency outboard power supply circuit with substantial power reserves, delivering an authoritative headphone output of up to 18WPC, ushering headphones into a new realm of personal listening experience.

Immersive Enjoyment

The driver tubes amplify signal voltage so that the rest of the amplification circuit can operate at a very linear condition.

The KT170 output tubes, operating in single-ended Class A, will produce completed amplified output without splitting the musical signal into parts.

Cayin engineers meticulously designed the gain circuit, independently adjusting the working current of each stage of the vacuum tubes, to allow the Soul 170HA to fully display the unique rich tones of single-ended Class A design.

Single-ended Voltage Amplification

After carefully evaluating different alternatives, Cayin decided to use two indirectly heated dual triode 6SN7 to take care of the voltage amplification given its medium (amplification factor) and low internal resistance.

The JJ 6SN7 is impressive for its low noise and balanced tonal balance across the audible frequency ranges. The sound performance is dynamic, with rich details, and offers excellent musical expressiveness.

Outboard Power Supply Design Empowering with Ample Energy

Physically separated 2 box design, the outboard power supply delivers clean, low-noise electrical power to the amplification circuit in a separated chassis independently. It also provides better heat dissipation even when stacked up, allowing the users to place the amplifiers with flexibility.

Dual power supply transformers deliver high and low voltage separately, minimize electrical interference, and safeguard clean power to the amplifier.

Multi-stage tube-regulated power supply circuit feeds power to different amplification stages independently. It can minimize ripple effect, eliminate circuit interference, and enhance circuit performance of both the voltage and current amplification.

The separated high-rigidity chassis and damping mounts absorb shock and vibrations effectively, isolating noise interference caused by transformer vibrations and magnetic leakage to achieve a higher SNR.

Heavy-weighted Umbilical Cable

Custom designed silver-plated 6N copper wire to connect between the outboard power supply and main amplification chassis. Separate high and low voltage transmission, with a total of two cables.

6N copper offers excellent electrical conductivity, the high level of purity reduces the presence of impurities that can interfere with signal transmission, and it also ensures consistent performance and longevity of the cables.

Independent shielded to minimize external interference as well as interference between independent transmission of multi-stage power supply circuit.

Fool-proof Quick Release Connection

Quick-release connectors from the aviation industry are used at both ends of the cables for connection.

8-pin for high voltage power transmission, and 12-pin for low voltage, making sure the output from multi-stage power supply will feed to different amplification stages independently.

Tube Regulated Power Supply

Multi-stage tube-regulated power supply circuit feeds power to different amplification stages independently.

Soul 170HA employs 2x GZ34S rectifier tube from JJ to handle the driver stage high-voltage supply, providing a tube presentation that is more euphonic and nuanced.

The rectifier tube converts the incoming power source to DC, providing clean power with minimum interference for the circuit.

Unlike output tubes or driver tubes, the rectifier tubes convert signals without a heavy lifted load and can last for years without deterioration.

Since they are not involved in audio amplification directly, there are no matching requirements and they can be replaced on a per-piece basis.

The Flesh and Blood of Tube Amplifier

Transformer Coupled Balance Driven

Soul 170HA is a transformer-coupled single-ended Class A amplifier. The output from the KT170 will drive a pair of output transformers that support both headphone and speaker outputs.

The vacuum tube amplification circuit of Soul 170HA is operated in a single-ended, the output transformers provide an alternative phase and compose a balanced output, enabling a balanced driven from a single-ended vacuum tube circuit.

Custom Designed Audio Grade Transformers

Transformers play a vital role in Cayin's amplifiers. The choice of transformer core, specification of copper wire in different parts of winding, and the winding instruction affect the performance and sound signature of their amplifiers.

Cayin designs and winds all the power supply and output transformers in-house. This becomes their critical core competence and it allows the engineers to have total freedom in specifying the transformers for the circuitry they developed.

They consistently use high-purity copper enameled wire in the design of toroidal power supply transformers to reduce magnetic noise effectively.

The custom-designed wide-frequency response EI-type output transformer uses a high-quality Z11 silicon steel core, to minimize signal loss and enhance fidelity.

Cayin's shielding packaging technology and circuit protection measures further protect the machine from noise interference and extend the product's lifespan.

Dual Operation Mode

Triode Mode
KT170 screen grid connected directly to the anode. Tender, smooth and elegant. Holography with sharp image, suitable for vocals, string music and mid-range focused genre.

Ultralinear Mode
A tap is added to the primary winding of the output transformers and connected to the KT170 screen grid, providing higher voltage and changing the operating state of the power tubes. Open, bold, with great momentum. The soundstage will open up, suitable for orchestral, OST, and music with wide dynamic range.

Impedance Matched Headphone Output

In-house designed output transformers provides three sets of impedance matched outputs to handle different headphone loadings accordingly:

Low (L): 8Ω-64Ω
Mid (M): 65Ω-250Ω
High (H): 251Ω-600Ω

Matching headphone impedance should produce a natural sound with well-defined bass reproduction. Planar headphones are more sensitive to impedance matching than dynamic headphones. Users can try out different settings after they are familiar with the sound signature of properly matched output.

A higher impedance setting will deliver higher output power because they are driving a harder load. It is completely different from gain control of a solid-state amplifier.

Application Oriented Output

The 4-pin XLR output is a full-fetched balanced output but the 4.4mm headphone output is optimized for wider range of applications, including high-sensitivity portable headphones and IEMs:

The 4.4mm phone out optimization has taken low-impedance high-sensitive headphones and IEMs into consideration. Cayin reduced the output and improved the S/N ratio, making sure the Soul 170HA is relevant to a very wide range of personal audio applications.

The lower output of 4.4mm phone out can also serve as a fallback when the system suffers from unidentified hum and interference.

Dynamic Auto Bias

The Soul 170HA adopts an integrated bias servo circuit design. When replacing vacuum tubes, there is no need for manual adjustment, as the Dynamic Auto Bias servo circuit handles it.

It precisely controls the power tubes, ensuring better compatibility with the amplifier. The innovative circuit design enhances safety and prolongs the lifespan of the vacuum tubes.

0dB Gain Difference

The volume control circuit comprises a custom ALPS carbon film potentiometer and a JRC MUSES72320V electronic volume chips.

The ALPS volume potentiometer acts as a physical motion sampler, and the MCU controls the two low-noise low-distortion electronic controlled resistor ladder analogue volume chips to achieve 128 levels of high precision volume control, making it more stable and reliable than traditional potentiometers. The 170HA's high-precision volume control circuit ensures a 0dB gain difference between the two channels.

Comprehensive Protection for Ideal Performance

The Soul 170HA uses an MCU to manage the entire headphone amplifier, incorporating multiple protection circuits and startup sequences to provide comprehensive protection from power on, playback, to power off. This safeguards the vacuum tubes while ensuring the amplifier always operates in an optimal state.

Hand-matched Vacuum Tubes

The vacuum tubes used in the Soul 170HA are manually tested and matched. They undergo strict performance testing, a 48-hour aging process, final measurements after installed on amplifier, and listening test to ensure high standards of channel uniformity.

Classic Point-to-Point Wielding

The entire circuitry is hand-wired using point-to-point wielding, this is time-consuming but ensures the shortest signal path with low signal loss. It also isolates audio signal, grounding, and high voltage power from cross-infecting each other, preventing mutual interference and ensuring the performance and reliability of the Soul 170HA.

High-end AudioCapX PPFXS Coupling Capacitors effectively isolate DC, improve the accuracy and stability of audio transmission, and enhance overall sound quality.

NuTube 6P1 Application

The tube circuit adopts a three-stage amplification architecture, consisting of 6 Toshiba 2SK209 audio-specific junction field effect transistors (JFETs) and a manually tested paired KORG Nature 6P1 dual triode tube. Both the single-ended and balanced ports on the RU9 can output rich tube sound.

With years of experience crafting high-end audio equipment, Cayin has applied their expertise to engineer the RU9 with exceptional components. RU9 is equipped with dual Equipped with dual AK4493SEQ DACs, each operating in mono mode. The Left and right channels are decoded separately for lower crosstalk and better channel separation. 

Employing the latest generation XMOS XU316 USB processor, RU9 supports native DSD512 and 32bit/768kHz PCM signals. The processed signal is then amplified by a four-channel balanced headphone amplifier circuit. It uses dual ultra-low noise and ultra-low distortion OPA1662 OPAMPs with four Nexperia audio power tubes.

The built-in 2000mAh lithium battery offers up to 4.7 hours of playback on a single charge. The RU9 also supports USB power directly from connected devices (bypassing the battery), as well as an external DC power supply for enhanced output performance. Fully Balanced Resistor Network Discrete 1-Bit DAC and Dual Amplifiers

RU7 uses a specialized micro-miniaturized 1-Bit DAC with the power of a standard 4 channel DAC architecture. The array of 128 high precision Thin Film Resistors closely resembles the discrete DAC used in the Cayin N7 DAP. 

Dual amplifiers in parallel provide high output balanced power. The two amplifiers operate in parallel to provide 160mW @ 32 ohms in single-ended output and 400mW @ 32 ohms for the balanced output.

Discrete Volume Control

The 1-Bit DAC design is very demanding of the input signal, and we recommend that you provide the maximum possible digital output volume from your mobile device to get the best signal from RU7. Cayin's specially developed low noise, low power consumption 100 step volume control offers precise control over a wide volume range to power a range of sensitive and harder to drive IEMs and headphones.

Dual PCB Design Minimizes Interference

RU7 uses a similar design to its predecessor, RU6, with two 6 layer PCB boards, separating digital and analog functions of the device. The two layers safeguard signal integrity and keep noise from the reference clock and DSP from bleeding into the amplification circuit.

Fully-discrete, Fully-balanced Unexplored Frontier

Going discrete is technically more demanding, but it allows more room to fine tune sound signature and deliver superior performance over op-amp based designs.

Regular stereo circuits compose of left (L) and right (R) channels with balanced circuits involving differential inputs and outputs, hence a required L+, L-, R+, and R-. Cayin makes its first attempt to use discrete circuits for DAC, LPF and headphone amp in the N7 DAP. It adopts a symmetrical double-side PCB layout to minimize interference and keep the layout and length of the signal path as uniform as possible.

Dual Amp Operation Mode
The Dual Amplifier Operation Mode allows you to switch between Class A and Class AB modes instantly through the pull down menu. Choose the sound signature to fit your personal preference of sound, genres, and/or pairing with different IEM/headphones:

• Class A Mode: Low distortion, optimum playback condition. Silky smooth, warm and lush. Best fit for sentimental music with lots of detail and macro dynamic.

The Devil in the Details
Class A amplification requires all channels to be aligned with near-identical gain. To achieve this, critical components must be manually matched and installed to the PCB before reflow soldering. Similarly, the static current must be controlled so that discrete components will maintain stable operation in saturation mode. Multiple adjustable resistors are installed so that the PCB can be fine-tuned manually to consistently match the reference design.

The C201, E203 and R202 motherboards for the Cayin N6iii differ in design and sound performance. The C201 features 8x Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chips, delivering a clean and transparent playback with a slight smoothness to the highs.

The E203 uses dual ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chips, offering a more analytical, precise sound with enhanced clarity and dynamic range, catering to those seeking a highly detailed and neutral listening experience.

The R202 features both a 24-bit R-2R ladder DAC and a discrete 1-bit DAC, each using ultra-precise 0.1% thin-film resistors for native PCM and DSD decoding. While R-2R Mode provides a rich, smooth sound, 1-Bit Mode offers a more natural rendering with a clear soundstage.

C201

The C201 is the first time Cayin has used a Cirrus Logic DAC chip in a portable product. Historically, in the early 2000s, the CS4398 and PCM1792 DAC chips were dominant in the audio industry, and Cayin used them extensively in its early DAC and CD players.

The C201 audio motherboard in the N6iii features (x8) Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chips, arranged in a “Parallel Full-Differential Matrix DAC” design. Each DAC operates in MONO mode, receiving individual I2S signals and outputting differential signals. Groups of (x4) DACs combine for a full-differential output channel, with discrete, symmetrical power supplies ensuring stability and precise phase alignment. This low-jitter, high-performance design enhances sound density, reduces distortion, and delivers exceptional audio quality.

E203

The DAC chip in the E203, the ES9039SPRO, was developed under the latest Hyperstream® IV architecture.

The ES9039SPRO features an 8-channel independent current output path, to align with this design, Cayin has implemented an 8-channel independent I/V (Current-to-Voltage) conversion circuit corresponding. It is followed by the LPF circuit to extract four fully-differential signals, which are then paired with a Buffer driver circuit.

The Cayin R202 motherboard is a high-performance audio module built around a fully discrete, fully balanced dual-DAC architecture. Custom-molded shock absorption Silicon housing to hold and shield the JAN6418 vacuum tube. Designed pairs of suspension pins into the CNC aluminum frame of N3Ultra, the JAN6418 is hanged vertically with suspension effect.

Cayin integrated the miniature vacuum tube with the body frame, achieving multi-directional stress relief for the tube's filament. Incredible Craftsmanship and In-house design

The entire circuit is hand wired using point to point wiring, rather than a circuit board. Point to point, shortens the signal path and improves the efficiency and conductivity. Cayin also uses power transformers designed and wound in house, to ensure that the shielding and output is up to their standards. Clean Power with Minimum Interference

HA-3A users the renowned RCA 25AX4GT as a rectifier tube. The rectifier converts the incoming power souce to DC current and the RCA 25AX4GT does this while minimizing interference and providing clean power to the amplification circuit. Accompanying the RCA 25AX4GT Rectifier are dual matched JJ 12AU7/ECC82 in the driver stage, and dual EHX 6V6GT for the output stage.

Transformer-coupled, Balanced Drive

The 6V6 output drivers a pair of proprietary output transformers that support single-ended and balanced headphone outputs. The secondary winding of the output transformer provides the alternate phase needed for a balanced output, enabling balanced power from a single-ended origin.

The Pursuit of Direct Heated Triode (DHT) Perfection

DHT refers to triode tubes that use the cathode as the filament and heat up the cathode directly. This simple approach offers stellar dynamics, excellent representation of transients, and a transparent presentation. Using this design for headphones is even more challenging because DHT designs are sensitive to shock, vibration, and electrical inference.

The Irresistible 300B

HA-300MK2 uses a matched pair of Golden Lion PX300B low-noise audio triodes, which are renowned for their dreamy tonal characteristics, as its power output tubes. Each tube used by Cayin is tested for reliability, natural sound signature, and frequency extension.

Less is More

HA-300MK2 is a Single-Ended Triode Amplifier (SET) which uses a single vacuum tube to amplify the signal. Combined with a 2-stage amplification design, this provides a clear, linear amplification.

New Old Stock (NOS) Rectifier Tubes

HA-300MK2 uses 4x NOS RCA 22DE4, one of the best versions of the 22DE4 available. The rectifier stage converts incoming power to DC current, and Cayin's design offers clean power with minimum interference.

Speaker Output

HA-300MK2 also functions are a speaker amp, with a 8W per channel Class A output. You can connect speakers and seamlessly switch between headphones and speaker output.

Choice of Timbre Vacuum Tubes/Solid State

C9 uses a custom-designed fully balanced 4-ch dual timbre circuit with the Toshiba 2SK209 JET(Quad Set) for solid state, and a Korg Nutube 6P1 Double Direct Heated Triode for tube mode. You can use either mode for both Single-ended and Balanced Headphone Output

Vacuum Tube Timbre Circuit

The Redesigned timbre circuit gives you a livelly, euphonic, and delicate presentation using two miniature double Direct Heated Triode (DHT) for both Balanced and Single-ended output, with carefully implemented NFB that reduce THD+10 to 0.03%. Cayin's innovative installation process eliminates the microphonic effect of vacuum tubes.

Solid State Timbre circuit

The solid state circuit delivers a warm and rich timbre that is realistic and engaging. It uses a fully discrete buffer and amplification audio circuit designed around two matched pairs of high quality, low noise Toshiba 2SK209 JFET op-amps.

Dual Amp Operation Mode

C9's dual amp operation mode lets you switch between Class A and Class AB operation instantly. Class A mode is less energy efficient, but provides the lowest possible distortion, and a warm, smooth, musical sound. Class AB offers longer battery life along with a clean, tight low-end presentation.

Dual Input Mode

C9's dual input mode allows you to optimally receive fixed or variable volume signals, and bypass the C9's volume control when connected to a device with its own volume control.

Line: Receives fixed voltage audio signal from line level output and functions as a headphone amplifier with local volume control

Pre: receives variable voltage audio signal from pre-amp output and function as a power amplifier: volume is controlled at the source equipment
